Priorities for our community
1) Remove the threat of eminent domain from all of the properties in the Grantville redevelopment project area. The Redevelopment Agency should not have the authority to seize properties to hand them over to a private developer. We accept that the government must at times use eminent domain for a generally accepted public use. We know, from the City Council hearing to accept the Grantville settlement agreement, that eminent domain may be removed at the discretion of the Redevelopment Agency. The District 7 City Council office should lead the way on this.
2) Any land use changes that come about as a result of the Grantville Master Plan process should be applied as overlay zoning. We do not want any businesses regulated out of Grantville based on a zoning change. According to the City's General Plan "Smart Growth" is to be implemented based on the free market and what is acceptable to the public. We know from the last GSC meeting that the public, based on the public opinion survey, likes Grantville the best the way it is. Any businesses that leave the area should do so based on free market factors and not as a result of City government trying to enforce "smart growth" in our community.
3) Improve the traffic flow in Grantville, especially at the I-8, Fairmount and Mission Gorge interchange. So far, the plans that have been floated to the public would make the traffic burden dramatically worse. Some studies suggest increasing the population density here would double the average daily trips on Mission Gorge and Friars. Many roads and intersections would move into the F service category. It was somewhat encouraging that at the last GSC meeting the planners were speculating for new residential units in Grantville to number in the 4,000 range. The number that had previously been mentioned was 6,000. Either way, the major roads will not cut it and the residential streets in Allied Gardens will pay the price.
My personal priority for Grantville is to maintain Friars Road Pet Hospital on Friars Road in Grantville into perpetuity. I'm sure that most of my neighbors have similar personal goals for their businesses. This is why it is so important that we remove the threat of eminent domain from the area. We in Grantville should not have diminished civil rights (Fifth Amendment) than others, just because our community is (fraudulently) deemed a redevelopment project area.
